US' general policy towards immigration.
The United States is a country that was built by immigrants, however attitudes towards immigrants have changed over the years. These days it is not easy to move to the US because of the changes in their immigration policy that have been brought about by the fact that there are just so many people who want to live in America. These changes have made it very important that you understand the immigration policy so that you can give yourself the best possible chance of getting approved.
A lot of people would say that the US really doesn't have a policy towards immigration, instead they have a series of rules that often conflict with each other and make the whole process much more complicated than it has to be. There is certainly some truth to this but it would also be fair to say that the United States do have clear goals on what they are trying to achieve with their immigration policy. Clearly a lot of people disagree with the policy however and this is what leads to the impression that there is a problem.
The immigration policy of the United States is clearly aimed at bringing in immigrants who will be a benefit to the US. Usually this means that they will be economically beneficial. The big thing that they look at when they are trying to determine whether a person will be allowed to immigrate is how likely they are to able to find and hold a job. What they really want to see is that you have job skills, preferably in a high demand area. That being said a lot of immigrants are admitted each year despite really not meeting this requirement.
The other big thing that the United States looks for in potential immigrants is an ability to fit in. This is one of the differences between the US and a lot of other countries when it comes to immigration, they want immigrants who will adapt to the American way of life. That means that you are going to be expected to learn to speak English if they don't already and to make an effort to become American.
These days the over riding concern of American officials when it comes to immigration is security, they are very cautious about who they allow in. There is of course a legitimate concern about terrorism that they do need to be on the lookout for. However there are a lot of people who would argue that they have gone too far and are refusing to allow entry on the mere suspicion even if there is no evidence. Regardless if you are planning to immigrate to the US you can expect a very thorough background check and you will have to jump through a lot of hoops in order to demonstrate that you are not a security risk.
